Frequently asked questions
Answers to the questions I get asked most often.
Does getting a tattoo hurt?
It depends on the placement and your sensitivity. Most clients describe an unpleasant scratching rather than pain. Areas with more muscle and fat (upper arm, thigh, calf) hurt less than bones, joints, ribs or feet. We take a break whenever you need one.
How much does a tattoo cost?
The price follows from size, detail, colour and placement. Indicative prices are on the pricing page; you get an exact quote after the consultation about your specific motif.
How long is the wait for a date?
Usually a few weeks, longer for large projects. The current booking status is shown on the home page. Once the deposit is paid your date is firmly reserved.
Can I bring my own design or a picture from the internet?
Absolutely. Your own sketch or references are the best start. I do not copy somebody else's tattoo one to one, though: I redraw the motif so it is yours and fits your body.
Do you cover up old tattoos?
Yes, cover-ups and reworks are my specialty. Send me a photo of the existing tattoo in daylight. I will assess what can be covered and how large and dark the new motif needs to be. Sometimes a few sessions of laser lightening first help a lot; I will tell you straight.
Can you tattoo over a scar?
Usually yes, if the scar is fully healed (as a rule at least a year old) and not raised or keloid. I work the scar into the design. Scar tissue takes ink differently, so a second session is sometimes needed.
How long is a session, and why are large pieces split up?
A small motif takes one to three hours; a full-day session is about six hours of actual tattooing. Skin tolerates longer sessions badly and heals worse, so a sleeve or a back piece is split into several sessions three to six weeks apart.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes, one person. The atelier is small and concentration matters. For safety reasons children do not belong in the atelier.
How should I prepare?
Sleep well, eat, no alcohol for 24 hours, no sunburn at the placement and comfortable clothes. The full list is on the How it works page.
How long does healing take, and when can I swim or sunbathe?
The surface heals in two to three weeks, the deeper layers in up to two or three months. Bathing, swimming pools, saunas and sunbathing wait at least three weeks, and afterwards always with SPF 50. Details on the Aftercare page.
